Responsible Care®
KCSR has been a Responsible Care® partner company since 1999. In 2002, the American Chemistry Council adopted the management system approach for implementing Responsible Care® in the U.S., including mandatory, independent, third-party certification. KCSR received Responsible Care® Management System (RCMS) headquarters certification by formalizing its Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Management System.
SmartWaySM Transport
KCSR is a partner in SmartWaySM Transport, an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the freight sector designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, and improve energy security.
TRANSCAER®
Transportation Community Awareness Emergency Response (TRANSCAER®) is a community outreach program designed to address community concerns regarding the transportation of hazardous materials, through planning and cooperation. As a community service, KCSR and KCSM host events for emergency responders, providing instruction on the safe transportation of hazardous materials and emergency procedures.
These events typically include a specially-equipped train of rail cars for hands on training. The consist includes high and low pressure cars, a car with a variety of manways to demonstrate the handling of leaks caused by non-accident releases, and a modified boxcar to serve as a classroom.
Instruction topics typically include emergency contacts, tank car damage assessment, how to approach a rail accident, securing rail hazmat data, emergency locomotive shutdown, spill mitigation techniques and other related topics.
Freight Rail Works
KCS is a member of the Association of American Railroads, promoting the fact that Freight Rail Works. America's freight railroads are investing a record $10 billion in rail infrastructure and innovations. The industry is hauling more freight than ever before and we care about the environment.
