SAFETY AND SECURITY

Moving your shipment safely and securely is our priority.

In the U.S., KCS has been consistently recognized for its employee safety record by the E.H. Harriman Memorial Awards Institute with a Gold Award in 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010; Bronze Award in 2003 and 2004; and a Silver Award in 2005. In terms of security, KCS railroad police and a canine unit work closely with local and state law enforcement, U.S. Customs and the Department of Homeland Security to ensure full process integration.

In Mexico, KCS has a multi-layered safety and security process, which includes an extensive network of full-time and contract agents, canine units, guard points, guards on trains in high risk areas, patrol vehicles and a 24-hour a day and seven days a week security desk that tracks data and trends and serves as a communication link. Each train is constantly monitored from origin to destination through multiple security filters allowing KCS to monitor and record cargo conditions. At the Laredo/Nuevo Laredo gateway and at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, KCS trains go through a VACIS scanning system. At Saltillo and San Luis Potosi, trains go through a high speed digital imaging system. Utilizing the rail inspection portals, cars are monitored throughout the route; and upon delivery, KCS documents the condition of the freight and its seals.

KCS’ security process is working. In 2010, the customer claims rate for theft, vandalism or accidents for all shipments moving on KCS in Mexico was 0.02 percent, which means that 99.98 percent of all loads we transported were moved without a claim from customers. In 2009, our freight security index was 99.94 percent. These metrics show we are headed in the right direction.

In both the U.S. and Mexico, KCS is certified and validated in the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT).
