Federal government extends PTC deadline

October 30, 2015

On October 29, President Obama signed into law a bill extending the Positive Train Control (PTC) implementation deadline, following passage of the bill by the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday and the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.  Previously, the implementation deadline was December 31, 2015.

Under the modification, the deadline is extended to December 31, 2018, a three year extension, with up to 24 months’ additional extension if approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, to fully implement PTC on routes where it is required, after completing equipment and spectrum requirements and meeting certain other requirements.

Carriers will submit revised implementation plans by January 27, 2016, showing among other things, how they will meet the new deadline.  KCSR plans to request the additional 24-month extension, and believes it can and will meet the new deadlines, and is delighted with the legislation and its passage by Congress.
