On April 13, the KCSR Environmental and Hazmat department conducted a TRANSCAER® (Transportation Community Awareness Emergency Response) event for area first responders in West Point, Miss. Participants learned about railroad emergency response (tank cars, train consists and commonly shipped hazmat commodities); components of a tank car (common leaks-tank car valves, pressure relief devices and internal piping); locomotive emergency response; and chlorine cars (pressure cars and application of a c-kit on a chlorine tank car dome).
KCSR works closely with emergency responders in communities along the railroad to build relationships and prepare to respond should there ever be an accident on the railroad involving hazardous materials.
TRANSCAER® is a voluntary national outreach effort that focuses on assisting communities to prepare for and respond to a possible hazardous materials transportation incident. TRANSCAER® members are volunteer representatives from the chemical manufacturing, transportation, distributor and emergency response industries, as well as the government.
