Annual Private Industry Track Inspections

KCSM places a high priority on ensuring that our lines are maintained and operating at their optimal performance. We are dedicated to performing preventative Maintenance of Way work to avoid emergency repairs or unsafe conditions. The safety of our employees, our customers’ shipments and the communities we serve is a top priority.  

For us to be successful in end-to-end service, we look for collaboration with our customers and partners at the facilities we serve. As such, we wanted to take this time to remind those of you with private tracks that maintaining those is an obligation to ensure the safety of the shipments and people, and to prevent service interruptions due to the need for emergency repairs.  

KCSM performs annual inspections on privately owned track used by KCSM to access a facility. In an effort to minimize the inconvenience for all parties of these inspections, here are a few items to keep in mind: 

  • KCSM Engineering Department will contact the Facility Manager to confirm a date and time for the inspection.  
  • We ask that any clearance or admittance requirements to gain access for the inspection is coordinated with KCSM in advance of the scheduled appointment.  
  • The results of the inspection will be provided by KCSM Engineering, who will be happy to review the results with the relevant parties prior to leaving.  
  • Should there be critical safety concerns noted, proof (photographic and notes) of the repairs will be required to close the inspection.  
  • It should be noted that per the applicable regulation, should a major safety issue be identified, KCSM can withhold service to the facility until such time as it is deemed safe to return. And, should there be an incident (example:  derailment) after a safety issue was identified and communicated, the full cost of repairs (i.e. KCSM equipment, other shippers’ cars and/or freight) and any associated personnel injury will be the responsibility of the facility owner.
