In 2001, a group of warm-hearted volunteers invested more than 8,000 hours to transform retired rail cars into a smiling tank car named Rudy; a flatcar carrying Santa's sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; the elves’ workshop; a reindeer stable; and a little red caboose. For the past 19 years, the festive KCS Holiday Express train has brought Santa Claus and his elves to communities throughout KCS’ U.S. rail network in free, public events. In 2020, due to the pandemic, KCS will not operate this train, which traditionally draws large crowds.
However, the need sparked by the pandemic is greater than ever. So the Holiday Express’ other component as a charitable fundraiser for The Salvation Army will continue. Thanks to generous contributions from KCS employees, vendors and friends over 19 years, this project has raised well over $2.1 million to provide warm clothing and other necessities for children in need during the holiday season.
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the partnership between KCS and Salvation Army, the 2020 fundraising campaign is now underway. Contributions to the KCS Holiday Express fundraising campaign for Salvation Army will be distributed among 20 communities on the KCS network.
